Between 2018 and 2019, the FDA investigated a possible link between grain-free dog food and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a serious heart condition. Competing Theories on Mechanism

- Taurine deficiency. Taurine is an amino acid important for heart muscle function. Some legume-heavy diets may interfere with taurine synthesis or absorption, though many affected dogs in case reports had normal taurine levels — suggesting taurine deficiency alone doesn’t explain all cases.
- Legume-specific compounds. Legumes contain compounds that may affect nutrient bioavailability in ways not yet fully characterized, independent of taurine.

The honest summary: researchers see a statistical association between certain grain-free formulas (specifically legume-heavy ones) and DCM cases in breeds without known genetic predisposition, but the causal mechanism is not established, and correlation in observational data does not prove causation on its own.
Should You Stop Feeding Grain-Free?
This depends on why your dog is on a grain-free diet in the first place:

Warning Signs of DCM
